Prof. Liu Feng, president of China Coal Society, Prof. Song Xuefeng, president of CUMT and chairman of the conference, Prof. Liu Meilin, professor of the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, Mr. Zhao Liqun, deputy mayor of Xuzhou municipal government attended the opening ceremony.

President Liu said that energy is the fundamental material which is crucial for human’s survival and development. Human civilization depends on reasonable exploitation and utilization of energy resources as well as their sustainable development. The new round of industrial revolution featuring intelligentization, informationization, big data and greenization is emerging. The structure adjustment speeds up, and management of production safety in mine field and ecological environment protection has been reinforced. And along the course there are both challenges and opportunities. In addition, to make the coal industry follow the sustainable development path, we must push for a safe, green and intelligent coal mining and clean, efficient, low-carbon and intensive use of coal, promote the transformation of the coal industry from production-oriented mode to production-service-oriented one, and realize the transition of coal from traditional energy to clean energy.

President Song Xuefeng declared the meeting open. He said that the sustainable development of energy, resource and environment is an overall and strategic factor to a steady development of economy and society, and the clean and efficient utilization of energy also concerns the existence and development of human offspring. Entering a new era, China sees a radical revolution of energy technology. This conference, co-hosted by CUMT and CCS, aims to expedite the development of modern energy industry by adhering to the basic national policies about resources conservation and environmental protection, thus to highlight the position of the building of a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society in the national development strategy. And we will also endeavor to enhance the capacity to achieve a sustainable development so as to build an innovation-oriented country and a beautiful China.

Academician Liu Meilin said that several centuries ago, human secures energy needed in production, livelihood and economic development from oil, coal and other fossil fuels. So far the share of fossil fuels in world’s energy system remains great, thus the overuse of non-renewable energy results in serious environmental problems. Proper solution to the problems in the energy structure system is a critical step to ensure a green, sustainable future and meanwhile, it will change human’s life style, improve life standard and the environment.

Deputy mayor Zhao Liqun introduced the basic information about Xuzhou. He said that in recent years, Xuzhou has earnestly implemented President Xi Jinping’s new philosophy that lucid waters and lush mountains are mountains of gold and silver, and stuck to the new path of green and sustainable development and has made great progress in restoration of city ecological system, improvement of city function and the transformation and upgrade of industry. The ERESD has provided a precious opportunity to learn from each other by inviting so many distinguished experts, scholars and elites from both academia and industry to discuss the cutting-edge topics of energy, resources, environment and sustainable development.

A plenary session was held after the opening ceremony, during which 6 invited speakers delivered keynote speeches. Academician Li Meilin chaired the plenary session.

Key note speech by Prof. C.C.Chan, fellow of CAE and British Royal Academy of Engineering

Prof. C.C.Chan, fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and fellow of the British Royal Academy of Engineering, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Future travel and smart energy – the integration of energy, resources and the environment", advocating interdisciplinary and transnational cooperation in the field of electric vehicles. He mentioned that today's car energy consumption accounts for about 20%-30% of total energy consumption, which is extremely harmful to the environment. Therefore, the "automobile revolution" of energy and information, automobile and IT cross-border integration came into being. He also pointed out that innovative talents in the new era should possess comprehensive capabilities, actively break down industry barriers, and realize technological innovation to drive sustainable economic development as soon as possible.

Keynote speech by Prof. Wang Zhonglin, member of European Academy of Sciences and member of CAS

Prof. Wang Zhonglin, foreign fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the European Academy of Sciences, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Triboelectric nanogenerators for internet of things and self-powered systems". He said that energy is the foundation of the progress of human civilization and how to use technology to stimulate the potential of distributed energy to meet the needs of distributed applications is an important issue. He specifically introduced the physical mechanism, realization path and application range of triboelectric power into energy power, and made feasible exploration for the parallel development of energy generation and environmental protection.

Chairman Liu Feng delivered a keynote speech entitled "New trends, requirements and thoughts on the innovation and development of coal science and technology in China". He said that coal has always been in the main position in China's energy production and consumption. In the current situation of the continuous development of intelligent coal mines, China's intelligent coal mining work has been basically popularized, and coal safety production, occupational health and efficient mining levels have been improved continually. He also pointed out that it is necessary to adhere to the principles of conceptual innovation and technological innovation support, and promote the coordinated development of networks, information and data.

Keynote speech by Prof. Guan Dabo, fellow of British National Academy of Social Sciences

Guan Dabo, fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a keynote speech entitled "International trade, climate change and emission-reduction". He said that the change in coal use is inextricably linked to economic development. Cities are the key subject in the process of mitigating climate change. Cities must pay close attention to establishing a system framework to tackle climate change, set realistic goals, and balance the relationship between low carbon development and energy use, and finally speed up the pace of low carbon.

In addition, he also pointed out that the transformation of trade and consumption patterns cannot be based on one country’s efforts. We must also focus on emerging economies around the world, providing economic resources for underdeveloped regions while realizing balanced development through both energy use and environmental protection.

Keynote Speech by Prof. Derek Elsworth, fellow of the American Academy of Engineering

Derek Elsworth, fellow of the American Academy of Engineering, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Prospects for mitigating gas-driven outbursts through reservoir treatment and dynamic gas fracturing." He said that although the safety of coal mining in China has been greatly improved, the gas explosion is still a serious problem. Because most of the domestic mines are deep, and the gas is more likely to explode under overpressure conditions. In response, he proposed to change the permeability of the system by reducing the pressure, increasing the stress and increasing the weight by fission. Also, we can control the machine design and coal mining to reduce the occurrence of explosion accidents.

Vice President Bian Zhengfu delivered a keynote speech entitled “Future mining, future energy, future CUMT”. He said that we are in an era of development and change. The energy structure is changing constantly, and the use of renewable energy is a future trend. However, the dominance of fossil energy will not change for quite a long time. At the same time, China's coal is also facing problems such as low storage, poor exploitation environment, ecological degradation and large carbon emissions. Therefore, China still has a long way to go in energy exploitation and utilization. CUMT has made outstanding contributions in coal mining, processing and utilization as well as coalbed methane exploration. In the future, CUMT will also keep up with the trend of the times, take “mining bright” as its own duty, take “lighting up the future” as its goal, and make unremitting efforts to build a world-class university with  energy and resource characteristics.

Technical sessions were held from the afternoon of June 2 to 3. Experts exchanged viewpoints in 33 sessions on 6 topics including energy science and technology, resource development and utilization, environmental science and engineering, sustainable energy and green development, intelligent equipment and technology, and occupational safety and health.
