From June 1 to 2, a delegation led by Vladimir Burlakov, Director General of International Competence Center for Mining-Enginnering Education under the auspices of UNESCO, Saint Petersburg Mining University, Russia, Dmitry Petrakov, Vice-Chancellor of Teaching, Yevgeni Liubin, Vice-Chancellor of International Studies, Sergey Chernyadiev, Head of the News Center, and their entourage paid a work visit to CUMT. President Song Xuefeng and Vice Principal Bian Zhengfu held a two-day working meeting with the delegation on deepening practical cooperation between the two universities.

At the welcome ceremony, Mr. Song Xuefeng first extended his warm welcome to the delegation for its visit and expressed his gratitude to President Litvinenko of Saint-Petersburg Mining University for the high importance they attach to the cooperation between the two universities. He said that Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed on May 24 when he met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin that “consolidating and developing China-Russia relations is not only the will of the people, but also the call of the times. We should continue to expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges and open up a new prospect of empathy of the two peoples”. The delegation's visit will undoubtedly further promote the in-depth development of educational research cooperation and exchanges between both universities. At the symposium, Mr. Song Xuefeng, on behalf of CUMT, comprehensively introduced the delegation about CUMT’s history, basic data situation, discipline and professional rankings, teaching and research achievements, international exchanges and cooperation, and reviewed the rich results in cooperation between the two universities at different stages since the 1950s. He expected this visit to enable both universities to deeply tap the highlights of cooperation, explore paths to cooperation, earnestly implement the consensus reached by both universities, and further deepen their practical and cooperative relationship for common development.

The delegation was sent by President Litvinenko to visit CUMT with the purpose of conducting in-depth discussion on the practical cooperation between the two universities in order to implement the consensus reached at the work talk between President Litvinenko and President Song Xuefeng on April 13th to achieve high-level exchange of visits between the two universities within the year, Mr. Burlakov expressed. At the same time, he said that Russian President Putin recently signed a decree to reform Russian higher education and designated Saint-Petersburg Mining University as one of the first pilot universities. He hoped that this visit will both further deepen the friendship and cooperation between the two universities and deeply understand the successful experience of Chinese universities, especially CUMT, in running school.

The two-day work visit has enabled the delegation of Saint-Petersburg Mining University to gain a deep understanding of CUMT’s undergraduate and graduate training system, talent cultivation, key research fields, and cooperation with Russia, as well as the current status and planning of discipline development. They also visited CUMT’s National Virtual Simulating Testing and Teaching Demonstration Center for Mining Engineering, National Testing and Teaching Demonstration Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Innovation Training Center for College Students, as well as State Key Laboratory for Intelligent Construction and Health Operation & Maintenance of Deep Ground Engineering, State Key Laboratory for Fine Coal Exploration and Intelligent Development, and Modern Analysis and Computing Center.

At the summary meeting on the visit, Mr. Burlakov highly praised CUMT's unique school-running model with Chinese characteristics formed through inclusiveness in its historical development, and expressed sincere gratitude for the meticulous preparation and comprehensive introduction that CUMT made for this delegation's visit. He said that after returning to Russia, the delegation will make a special report on the achievements of the visit to China University of Mining and Technology to the Academic Committee of Saint-Petersburg Mining University, and looked forward to the fruitful results of the all-round cooperation between the two universities in the future. Vice President Bian Zhengfu expressed that the China University of Mining and Technology and Saint-Petersburg Mining University are both mining universities, shouldering the same mission and task. He hoped that the two universities can jointly provide their own countries with stable talent reserves and technical support for the sustainable development of energy, resources and environment through in-depth cooperation and mutual learning.
