Vice President Bian Zhengfu Presented CUMT Friendship Award Certificate to Prof. Hai-sui Yu


On September 27, Vice President Bian Zhengfu met with Prof. Hai-sui Yu, Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, conducting in-depth exchanges on strengthening practical cooperation between the two universities. Relevant heads from the International Office, the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics & Deep Underground Engineering, the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering and the School of Mathematics joined the meeting.

Vice President Bian Zhengfu first extended his warm welcome to Prof. Hai-sui Yu for his visit and expressed sincere gratitude for his great help and guidance in CUMT’s teaching and research during his tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham and the University of Leeds in the UK. During the meeting, he briefly introduced CUMT’s history, how CUMT became a prestigious university through talent cultivation, global cooperation, and developing disciplines with its own characteristics under the vision of creating a world-class university with energy and resources as outstanding disciplines, as well as how CUMT adjusted the discipline layout by prioritizing engineering and sciences, vigorously developing arts, medicine, and new disciplines. He also expected further cooperation with the University of Leeds.

Prof. Hai-sui Yu said that he has established a profound personal relationship with CUMT over these years, and has witnessed the striking progress of CUMT. As a founding member of The Russell Group in the UK, the University of Leeds has now become a comprehensive research-oriented university, which attaches great importance to interdisciplinary teaching and research. It has climbed significantly in the university ranking across the UK and globally. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he will continue to encourage and support more practical cooperation between the two universities.

At the meeting, both parties had in-depth exchanges on cooperation in joint training of students, exchange of teachers, and joint scientific research. Vice President Bian Zhengfu presented, on behalf of CUMT, Prof. Hai-sui Yu with the 2020 CUMT Friendship Award certificate.

After the meeting, Prof. Hai-sui Yu gave a presentation titled “Implementation of Internationalization Strategy at the University of Leeds”, in which introduced the ten-year development strategy of the University of Leeds and how internationalization contributed to the university’s development. Heads of CUMT’s relevant functional departments and staff responsible for international programs in different schools and research departments listened to the presentation and discussed with Prof. Hai-sui Yu on hot and difficult issues related to international programs.
