On July 16, the closing ceremony of the 2021 Summer School of the International Higher Education Alliance for Mining, Energy and Environment, hosted by the China University of Mining and Technology, was held at CUMT in Xuzhou, China. Over 90 foreign and Chinese students and teachers attended the ceremony on site or online.
In his conclusion remarks, Prof. Zhou Fubao, Vice President of CUMT, expressed his sincere congratulations to all the participants on their successful completion of the two-week summer school courses and extended his heartfelt thanks to all the teachers for their hard-working course delivery. Also, he expressed his gratitude to the member universities of the Jiangsu-UK World-Class University Consortium for their great support for the program. He said, in order to satisfy the needs of students from different countries to understand China, especially a modern China, CUMT has optimized and adjusted the course arrangements for this year’s program, innovated the form of delivery by combination of online and on-site learning, which has led to a good teaching and learning outcome. He hoped that every participant would serve as an ambassador of people-to-people and culture exchanges by sharing with their family members and friends what they have learned in the program about China in the new era. Meanwhile, he welcomed all the participants to CUMT for studies and exchange after the pandemic.
On the ceremony, four student representatives shared their learning experience and gave their high comments on the professional and culture courses of the program, including Sarah Zouari from THGA University of Applied Sciences in Germany, Itmam Abedin from the University of Wollongong in Australia, Xia Hao from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in China and Mammadou Mamadou Bazoum, an international student of CUMT. Following that, Ding Hanchu and Zhou Yuning from CUMT’s School of Humanities and Arts presented a special Chinese traditional musical instrument show with Erhu solo “Pentium Horses” and Chinese Dulcimer Solo “A Wedding Compliment” respectively, which pushed the ceremony to a climax.
The Summer School Program received many positive comments from other students as well. Candelaria Torino from the Catholic University of Salta in Argentina said that the organization of the program was very good and he has gained a lot of knowledge about mining and renewable energy. CUMT Summer School has a positive influence on his future career and competitive professional. Wajayanto from Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta in Indonesia highly commented on the teaching skills and professional quality of CUMT teachers. He deemed that the knowledge he has learned in the program would help him greatly with his further study in mining engineering. Meanwhile, he was tremendously impressed by the broad and profound Chinese culture, as well as the great achievements of China’s economy and social development. Manikanta Grandhi from West Virginia University in the USA said that he was amazed at the excellent teaching skills and learning atmosphere of the program. He understood more about the communication way in China by taking the course of “Inter Culture Communication with Chinese”. Lu Yingnan, a student from Changzhou University (a member university of the Jiangsu-UK World-Class University Consortium), thought that the intensive English-taught lectures with rich contents were very helpful for her major study and English expression.
Professor Richard Bajura, the Interim Director of WVU US-China Center spoke highly of the Zoom techology used in the AMEE Summer School, which has certainly contributed significantly to the successful delivery of the program. Thanks to the Zoom format for the Summer School, he was able to participate in the opening and closing sessions and a few of the classes.
It is reported that this year is the 7th time for CUMT to host the Summer School Program since 2014. CUMT has worked to improve the course setting by adding new lectures related to advanced manufacturing technology, renewable energy and some other subjects of frontier science. In the meantime, the program has reserved regular mining and safety engineering courses, which are the traditional but strongest disciplines of CUMT. To cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, the summer school this year has combined the form of online and on-site learning with successful trials, and has attracted over 90 foreign and Chinese students from 22 universities in 12 countries to join the program, including THGA University of Applied Science in Germany, AGH University of Science and Technology in Poland, West Virginia University in the USA, Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo in Ecuador, Catholic University of Salta in Argentina, University of Wollongong, University of Western Australia, University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology in Australia, German-Mongolian Institute of Resource and Technology in Mongolia, Quangninh University of Industry in Vietnam, University of Zanjan in Iran, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta in Indonesia, University of Liverpool, University of Leeds in the UK, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunication, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Yangzhou University, Changzhou University, Huaiyin Institute of Technology and China University of Mining and Technology.
