Liu Bo, Secretary of CUMT Party Committee, led a delegation to visit four partner universities of University of Pécs, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, RWTH Aachen University, and AGH University of Science and Technology at their invitation from September 18 to September 27.
The first visit was made to University of Pécs on September 18, during which the delegation met with the rector Dr. Attila Miseta. Dr. Attila Miseta expressed his warm welcome to Liu Bo and her delegation and recalled the joyful experience he had when visiting CUMT for its 110th anniversary celebration ceremony in 2019. Liu Bo briefly introduced the development of CUMT and expressed her expectation for more personnel exchanges and deepened cooperation between CUMT and University of Pécs, a renowned higher learning institution with a history of over 650 years and one of CUMT’s key partners in Central and Eastern Europe. After the meeting, the delegation went to the Faculty of Sciences where they had in-depth discussions with the department head Prof. Tamás Atlasz and Prof. Horváth. Agreement was made on the establishment of CUMT-University of Pécs International Research Center in Chemistry. The delegation also visited the Szentagtothai Research Center at University of Pécs and forwarded to Pécs Municipal Government, on behalf of Xuzhou Municipal People’s Government, a letter of intent for the establishment of sister-city relationship.
The delegation visited TU Bergakademie Freiberg and RWTH Aachen University in Germany from September 19 to September 22. At the meeting， Chancellor Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht expressed his warm welcome to Liu Bo and her delegation, which is the first foreign delegation visiting the campus since the COVID 19 pandemic broke out. Prof. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht briefly introduced the characteristics of the university and the successful transition of the university to a science and engineering university featuring geology, materials, environment, and energy disciplines. He also said that the university stands ready to work with Chinese universities, including CUMT. Liu Bo said that TU Bergakademie Freiberg is the oldest mining university in the world, whose advantageous and featured disciplines echo the prioritized disciplines at CUMT. CUMT is willing to learn from TU Bergakademie Freiberg in talent cultivation, scientific research, and university-enterprise cooperation, and work together to boost cooperation in various fields. Liu Bo and her delegation also visited Chinese students and scholars at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
At RWTH Aachen University, Liu Bo met with Chancellor Prof. Ulrich Rüdiger, who expressed his warm welcome to the CUMT delegation and gave an introduction to RWTH Aachen University. He said that following two rounds of German University Excellence Program, RWTH Aachen University has made striking progress in fundamental research and interdisciplinary research, making it now a comprehensive and interdisciplinary university of science and technology. Research priorities at RWTH Aachen University are sustainable synthetic fuels, data mining, computational science, production technology, high-performance new materials, as well as health and renewable resources. It was agreed that a new cooperation agreement shall be drafted and signed as soon as possible to strengthen exchange and cooperation within the framework of the International Higher Education Alliance for Mining, Energy and Environment, and to facilitate high-level talent cultivation and international cooperation.
Liu Bo and her delegation went to Poland and visited the Chinese Embassy in Poland in Warsaw from September 23 to September 26. Liu Bo briefed Ambassador Sun Linjiang about CUMT’s development and educational exchanges with Poland. Ambassador Sun Linjiang expressed his willingness to support the exchange and cooperation between CUMT and Polish universities and his expectation that CUMT will play a positive role in promoting Sino-Polish friendship and cultural exchanges.
The delegation visited AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków and met with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Andrzej Tytko and representatives from the Department of Energy and Fuels, the Department of Materials and Ceramics Science, and the Department of Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Protection. Prof. Tytko welcomed Liu Bo and her delegation, saying that humanity is currently facing challenges in climate, environment, health, and energy and therefore universities need to enhance international cooperation to address these challenges. Liu Bo recalled the fruitful results both universities have made in practical exchanges and cooperation since the 1950s, especially after 2015, and said that AGH University of Science and Technology is a successful example that CUMT is learning from in its own transition. Both universities have a similar history and share the same disciplinary structure, which lay the foundation for them to conduct exchanges and cooperation in student training, scientific research, and university-enterprise cooperation. Thus, the two universities can learn from each other for common development.
The visit led by CUMT Party Committee Secretary Liu Bo to four partner universities in Europe is a return to the visits made by these four universities to CUMT at its 110th anniversary celebration in 2019. It is also a concrete step to implement CUMT’s internationalization strategy. This visit has strengthened the cooperative relationship between CUMT and partner universities in Hungary, Germany, and Poland and expanded CUMT’s reputation and international influence, which offers a strong impetus to make us a “Double First-Class” university and a world-class university with energy and resource characteristics.
