He expressed his hope that this conference would serve as a catalyst for collaboration, where together they could contribute fresh ideas, explore innovative approaches, and forge a new chapter in scientific mining and mining pressure theory, both in China and globally.

Liu Bo, representing the event organizers, extended her sincere gratitude to those who have consistently shown concern and support for CUMT’s development. She gave an overview of CUMT’s history and current development. Liu Bo stated that CUMT acknowledges that coal remains the primary energy and actively fosters theoretical and practical innovation in key mining technologies. This has significantly contributed to the innovation-driven optimization and upgrading of the coal industry, ensuring the safe and stable supply of energy in China, and underpinning the sustained and rapid growth of the national economy. This conference covers new concepts and technologies of green mining, as well as the theories and technologies of intelligent mining, equipment, and other developmental challenges. It is expected to further enhance the cutting-edge research in mining and mining pressure theories, and to develop new productive forces in the coal industry. Looking ahead, CUMT is willing to work with all parties to develop educational programs, new technologies and cultivate talents in the coal sector, promote synergy among various disciplines and foster industry-academia collaboration. CUMT is willing to work with all parties to contribute to the high-quality development of the coal industry and the construction of a powerful nation, making fresh and more significant contributions to the national revival.

Liu Feng, representing China National Coal Association and China Coal Society, stated that the instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping on coal operations offers a fundamental guideline for the industry’s high-quality development. Moreover, the high-quality development of China’s coal industry has yielded striking progress, including notable advancements in coal mine modernization, optimization of coal production organization and improvement of production efficiency. Mining safety has also been enhanced. Having analyzed the current challenges in the coal industry, he expressed his hope that participants would develop solutions to address challenges in coal exploration and utilization, including green and intelligent coal mining, prevention and control of mine disasters, and the clean and efficient utilization of coal, so as to promote deep mining.

Tong Laisheng, representing the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province, presented an overview of Hunan’s technological advancements and strategic development plans. He highlighted the significant emphasis placed by the Hunan provincial CPC committee and Hunan Provincial People’s Government on technological innovation, positioning it as a key pillar to bolster the high-quality economic and social progress. He hoped that participants would take this conference as a starting point to deepen exchanges and cooperation in talent training and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, supplement each other to foster win-win outcomes. These will facilitate the implementation of the “Three Hubs and Four New Missions” strategy in Hunan.

This two-day conference featured 65 high-level academic presentations, including reports from academicians, thematic reports, and special reports. On the morning of July 20, three academicians, Xie Heping, Kang Hongpu and Wang Guofa, gave their reports. Academician Xie Heping made a presentation entitled “Deep Earth Engineering Science and Future Deep Coal Mining Technology”, where he introduced a groundbreaking scientific concept: the fluidized mining of deep coal resources. This concept is aligned with the future direction of deep coal resource development. He delved into the definition and essence of in-situ fluidized mining of deep solid resources, presented the theoretical and technological framework, and elucidated the mechanism of multi-physical field coupling that could bring about transformative changes in the extraction of deep coal resources. In his report entitled “Key Technology and Equipment for 10-Meter Super High Mining of Extra-Thick Coal Seams”, Academician Kang Hongpu examined the national energy security and high-quality development demands placed on coal development. He introduced the theory and key technology of 10-meter super high working face rock control, setting new global benchmarks for coal mine support, mining, and transportation equipment. This advancement in technology and equipment effectively closes the technological gap in the one-time mining of extra-thick coal seams, marking a significant leap forward for China’s coal domestic equipment and mining technology, holding profound implications for the advancement of high-end equipment manufacturing, the energy technology revolution, and the high-quality development of the coal industry. Academician Wang Guofa delivered a presentation titled “Deep Coal Digital Intelligent High-efficiency Mining Technology and Engineering Application”, in which he dissected the context and challenges of deep coal mining projects. He elucidated the underpinnings of coal mining digital intelligence and the advancements within the intelligent technology framework of coal mines. Furthermore, he spearheaded the development of the inaugural high-efficiency and intelligent mining technology and equipment tailored for the working faces of deep, thick coal seams with substantial mining heights. This innovation propels the high-end transformation and high-quality development of China’s coal industry, thereby enhancing the nation’s energy security. It has facilitated the upscale, digital, and intelligent evolution of China’s coal sector, bolstering China’s capacity to ensure energy security. Following the presentations by the academicians, 16 experts and scholars specializing in cutting-edge technologies and theories within the field of mining engineering delivered thematic reports. At the four sub-forums on the morning of July 21, 47 scholars from domestic universities, enterprises, and research institutions presented reports on rock mechanics and mining safety, mining roadway and chamber rock control, mine power disaster prevention and control, and mine environmental protection, ecological restoration, as well as intelligent mining.

The National Conference on Scientific Mining and Mine Pressure Theory evolved from its predecessors, the Scientific Mining Forum and the Symposium on Mining Pressure Theory and Practice. Initiated by Qian Minggao, a distinguished mining scientist and academician from China University of Mining and Technology, the conference was named in honor of his academic philosophy, “Scientific Mining”. This philosophy has been pivotal in fostering the healthy and sustainable growth of China’s coal industry and in the implementation of the scientific mining concept.

Qian Minggao’s contributions have significantly influenced the industry’s development and the practical application of scientific mining principles. Academician Xie Heping also led the preparation of this conference, holding seminars in cities such as Chengdu and Nanjing. These seminars were instrumental in the conference’s preparations and ensuring its successful convening.
