The 11th APEC High-Level Forum on Energy Sustainable Development and APEC Economies Officials Training was successfully held in Yinchuan from September 16 to 17.
Under the theme “Building a New Power System to Achieve Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals,” the forum brought together over 200 participants from 13 economies, five international organizations, as well as domestic universities, research institutes, leading energy enterprises, and local governments. They gathered to explore new pathways for sustainable energy development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Bian Zhengfu, Vice President of CUMT, was invited to attend and delivered a speech at the forum’s steering committee meeting. He emphasized that CUMT has always regarded “developing mining, harnessing light, building the nation, and benefiting humanity” as its sacred mission. The university is committed to serving the national energy strategy and leading the low-carbon transition in the industry, striving to become a world-class institution with distinctive strengths in energy and resources.
He noted that CUMT has aligned its disciplinary development, scientific innovation, and talent cultivation with China’s carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. The university actively participates in regional energy governance initiatives and has been approved for a methane research project by the UN Environment Programme. Additionally, CUMT serves as the vice-chair of the Clean Fossil Energy Expert Group under the APEC Energy Partnership Network.
To further advance the work of the APEC Sustainable Energy Center, Bian proposed establishing a joint APEC Clean Fossil Energy Laboratory, launching an APEC Young Energy Scholars Program, and creating a smart database for energy industry chain data sharing to support evidence-based policymaking.
The forum was co-organized by the APEC Sustainable Energy Center and the Future Clean Energy Technology Center, with guidance from APEC, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Energy Administration, Tianjin University, and China Energy Investment Corporation. It was hosted by the Technology Economics Institute of China Energy, Ningxia Coal Industry Co., Ltd., and State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Co., Ltd.
