At the invitation of Russian Queen Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University (Saint Petersburg Mining University for short) and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), President Song Xuefeng led a delegation to visit the two universities from November 14 to 16, 2023.
On November 14, the delegation visited the research facilities and platforms of Saint Petersburg Mining University including the Geological Ecology Laboratory, the Digital Technology Education Laboratory, and the Research Center of Geomechanics and Mining Problems. The delegation also visited supporting venues such as the Mining Museum, the Fundamental Teaching Complex, and Multifunctional Conference Center.
On November 14 and 15, two meetings on talent cultivation and scientific research were held at Saint Petersburg Mining University . At the meeting on talent cultivation, Mr. Petrakov, Vice-Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining University, introduced the background, objectives, and measures of the ongoing higher education reform in Russia and said that Saint Petersburg Mining University, the only university that performs overall pilot reforms in Russia, is willing to strengthen communication with China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) for further optimizing talent cultivation programs. Based on the current situation and characteristics of higher education in China, CUMT President Song Xuefeng pointed out that similarities as well as differences exist in the Chinese and Russian higher education systems. China and Russia both value practical education in higher education, especially in engineering programs while they differ in training paths of postgraduates. For example, China has different paths for training post-graduates of professional degree programs and academic degree programs.
On November 15, President Song Xuefeng met with Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining University, and all members of its rectorate. He first congratulated Saint Petersburg Mining University on its 250th anniversary on behalf of CUMT, stating that Saint Petersburg Mining University is a world-renowned institution of higher education in mining with distinct features. Although 250 years have passed, it is still an outstanding university in the reform and development of talent cultivation, scientific research, and university management, which is worthy of learning from by CUMT. Since the two universities established the cooperative relationship in the 1950s, our relationship has been consolidated by the concerted efforts of university leaders.
Mr. Litvinenko said that it is good to have mutual visits between high-level officials of both universities this year, which lays the foundation for further deepening practical cooperation. They then conducted in-depth exchanges on topics such as establishing a regular communication mechanism, organizing mutual visits of teachers and students, conducting joint research, and setting up language training centers in two universities. They also agreed to further consolidate the existing friendly cooperative relationship, deepen exchange and cooperation to promote the development of both universities. After the meetings, the two universities signed new cooperation agreements.
On the morning of November 16, the delegation visited the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Saint Petersburg. President Song Xuefeng made an introduction of the comprehensive exchange and cooperation between CUMT, Saint Petersburg Mining University, and the International Competence Center for Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO. Acting Consul General Zhang Xiaoqing recognized the practical exchanges between CUMT and Russian universities, and hoped that CUMT will seize the opportunity to deepen the exchange and cooperation with Russian universities in talent cultivation, scientific research, and co-building of scientific research platforms.
On the afternoon of November 16, President Song Xuefeng met with Vitaliy Sergeev, SPbPU Vice Rector and correspondence member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Sergeev welcomed President Song Xuefeng and his delegation for their visit to SPbPU, stated that SPbPU, as a national research university in Russia, will explore the possibility of cooperating with CUMT in talent cultivation and scientific research. President Song Xuefeng introduced CUMT and said that as the Chinese presidency of the newly-established Jiangsu-Russia University Cooperation Alliance, CUMT is willing to maintain communication and cooperation with SPbPU within the framework of the Alliance, hoping to explore new areas of communication and cooperation based on the joint laboratory for new energy power generation and intelligent transportation. Both sides have expressed an intent of cooperation in fields such as mathematics, mechanics, artificial intelligence, energy storage, and advanced materials. The delegation also visited some laboratories of the Institute of Computer Science and Cyber Security and the Institute of Physics and Mechanics.
