From September 30 to October 3, Vice President Zhang Jixiong led a delegation to the University of Queensland and the University of Wollongong upon their invitation and attended Green Mining Conference 2024.

On October 1, the delegation visited the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology at the University of Queensland, engaging in insightful conversations with prominent experts and scholars, including Professor Peter Knights, Director of the Faculty, and Professor Mehmet Kizil. Professor Peter Knights warmly welcomed the arrival of Zhang Jixiong and his delegation and gave an introduction to the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology at the University of Queensland. He said that the University of Queensland and CUMT shared similar research orientations yet each has its unique strength. He hoped that both universities would enhance research collaboration, exchange of young scholars and sharing of teaching resources. Vice President Zhang Jixiong introduced CUMT, a leading university in the mining sector which is expected to become a world-class university in energy and resource research by the middle of the 21st century. CUMT will continue to contribute to the high-quality development of the energy industry. He hoped that stronger ties would be fostered between CUMT and the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology at the University of Queensland so as to promote mining and energy advancement. The delegation visited the laboratories of the University of Queensland, including Mining Geomechanics, Mechanical Testing, and UQ Innovate Makerspace, and had in-depth discussions about the latest advancements and achievements in mining engineering research.

From October 1 to 3, the delegation attended the Green Mining Conference 2024 and visited the University of Wollongong. On the morning of October 2, Vice President Zhang Jixiong addressed the opening ceremony. In his speech, he introduced the history of CUMT, talent cultivation, faculty and staff, robust scientific research platforms and extensive international cooperation. He commended the Green Mining Conference has served as a platform gathering scholars from across the globe to share latest advancement within this domain, thereby contributing invaluable insights and expertise to enhance mine safety. He hoped that at this year’s conference, participants would work together to help address our common challenges and promote internationalization of mining engineering by fostering closer ties and having in-depth communication. Vice President Zhang Jixiong also made a keynote speech entitled “Green and Low-carbon Solid Waste Backfilling Technology in Coal Mines and Its Practical Engineering Applications”. On the afternoon of October 2, Zhang Jixiong was invited by Vice Chancellors Eileen McLaughlin and Bradley Williams from the University of Wollongong to participate in the President Forum. With a long history, outstanding staff and exceptional teaching resources, CUMT attaches great importance to international collaboration. Last year, CUMT entered into a cooperation agreement with the University of Wollongong, which is expected to deepen our cooperation in scientific research, talent nurturing, faculty exchange, sharing of courses. Dean Huang Yanli of the School of Mines and Dean Zhai Cheng of the School of Safety Engineering presented an overview of the educational landscape of the schools and their endeavors in international exchange and shared their ideas for future international exchange and cooperation.

The Green Mining Conference 2024, with the theme of “Green Mining: Advancing Mine Disaster Prevention and Control Technology”, was co-hosted by the University of Wollongong, China University of Mining and Technology, Shandong University of Science and Technology, and Shandong Energy Group. Representatives from 29 domestic and international universities, research entities, and over 170 prominent experts and scholars attended the conference. Notably, CUMT was well-represented with a total of 13 experts and scholars presenting their insights at the conference.
