From October 15 to 19, Vice President Zhang Jixiong led a delegation to Saint Petersburg Mining University in Russia to participate in two high-profile forums under the BRICS banner. The first forum focused on “Mineral Resources as the Foundation of National Sovereignty: Talents and Innovative Environment”, while the second focused on “Hot Topics in the Rational Use of Natural Resources”. Both events were graciously hosted by Saint Petersburg Mining University. Accompanying the delegation were key personnel from the International Office, the Academy of Science & Technology, the Graduate School, the School of Mines, and the School of Foreign Studies of CUMT.
During the visit, Zhang Jixiong and his delegation had a productive meeting with Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining University, and Evgeniy A. Lyubin, Vice-Rector for International Affairs. Zhang Jixiong began by expressing his sincere gratitude to Litvinenko for the meticulous arrangements and warm hospitality extended to the delegation. He emphasized that Saint Petersburg Mining University holds a prestigious position as a long-standing and friendly partner of China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), and since the beginning of academic and scientific research cooperation in the 1950s, the inter-university partnership has been gradually strengthened. The two universities have jointly undertaken a number of fruitful endeavors, including student training programs, joint scientific research initiatives, and international conferences. In his remarks, Rector Litvinenko warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his hope that both sides would delve deeper into the unexplored areas of cooperation, thereby jointly fostering the continued growth and prosperity of this pragmatic partnership between the two universities. At the meeting, the two universities engaged in a productive dialogue regarding the renewed cooperation agreement. Both parties emphasized the need to consistently advance their partnership in talent development, with a special focus on the joint Ph.D. program, and aspired for this program to serve as a cornerstone for scientific cooperation bridging the mining industry and related disciplines. In addition, Zhang Jixiong and his delegation were cordially invited to visit the School of Mines, Saint Petersburg Mining University, where they met with personalities such as Prof. Oleg Kazanin (Dean of the School of Mines), Academician Vladimir Zubov (Dean of the Department of Mining Engineering), Prof. Simon Gendre (Dean of Department of Safety Engineering), and other distinguished specialists and scholars. At the meeting, both parties indulged in in-depth discussion and exchanges, especially in the areas of joint doctoral programs, young faculty exchange, supervisory team cooperation, joint research project application, joint summer or winter camp organization, and co-host of international conferences.
It is reported that these forums hosted by Saint Petersburg Mining University were included in the agenda of the BRICS Leaders Summit 2024, which attracted an impressive gathering of over 800 delegates from 42 different nations. Among these distinguished participants were rectors of outstanding universities, renowned scientists and influential leaders of multinational energy corporations, as well as key officials from the ministries and departments of education and science of the Russian Federation. As the coordinator of this summit in China, CUMT was proud to facilitate the participation of 56 young scholars and students from CUMT, Anhui University of Science and Technology, Northeastern University, Henan Polytechnic University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Liaoning Technical University, Xi’an University of Science and Technology, Northwest University, China University of Petroleum (East China), and Chongqing University.
