The 8th Student Exchange and Study Abroad Fair
On November 2, the 8th CUMT Student Exchange and Study Abroad Fair was launched at the library of the Nanhu campus. A total of 26 universities and educational institutions from 12 countries participated in the Fair, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Italy, and Austria.
Li Jiangtao, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, addressed the opening ceremony. He extended warm congratulations on the opening of the Fair and expressed gratitude to overseas universities and educational institutions for their support and participation in the event. He said that talent is the primary resource for developing new productive forces. Universities, as hubs for the integrated development of education, science, and technology, bear the significant responsibility of cultivating innovative talents. On the journey to building a world-class university with distinctive energy and resource characteristics, China University of Mining and Technology places great emphasis on the cultivation of international innovative talents. Since 2017, the CUMT Student Exchange and Study Abroad Fair has become a key step in implementing the national strategy of education internationalization and the university strategy of cultivating top-tier talents. CUMT will provide stronger policy support and create better conditions to facilitate students’ studying abroad.
Vice President for International Affairs of the University of Nottingham and the guest university representative, Nigel Mongan, stated in his speech that since the establishment of academic ties between the University of Nottingham and China University of Mining and Technology in 1993 and the signing of the first inter-institutional agreement in 2002, the partnership between the two universities has steadily developed. This partnership has become a model of cooperation between Chinese and British higher education institutions in promoting internationalization, innovative research, and addressing global challenges. Both universities place internationalization at the forefront of their strategic development, providing continuous momentum for the growth of their partnership. Additionally, both institutions attach great importance to the development of faculty, staff, and students, continuously expanding the scope of cooperation and developing new cooperation models. He welcomed faculty, staff, and students from China University of Mining and Technology to visit and study at the University of Nottingham, working together toward contributing to sustainable development goals.
Professor Qiao Yaning, an outstanding graduate of the University of Nottingham and a faculty member of the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering at CUMT, shared in his speech that his valuable experience studying at the University of Nottingham cultivated his dialectical thinking, ability to meet challenges, and skills in cross-cultural communication. After joining China University of Mining and Technology, he has fully applied the knowledge and experience gained abroad to his work, continuously improving his academic level and research capabilities. As an alumnus of the University of Nottingham and a teacher at China University of Mining and Technology, he pledged to continue playing an active role in fostering pragmatic cooperation between the two universities. Sun Yiming, a post-graduate student from the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering at CUMT, recalled her experience studying abroad at the Montanuniversität Leoben in Austria during her undergraduate years. She expressed gratitude for the precious platform provided by the university, which allows students to engage directly with high-quality overseas educational resources. She hoped that participants will learn useful information at the Fair and find the most suitable overseas universities for their further studies.
The 8th Student Exchange and Study Abroad Fair kicked off following the opening ceremony. Students visited different booths and consulted with staff from overseas universities. The University of Nottingham, the University of Leeds, Lancaster University, the University of Aberdeen, EPF Engineering School, CESI Engineering School, Technische Universität Dresden, the University of Wollongong, Griffith University, RMIT University, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel introduced their respective institutions to students and interacted with students regarding issues of their concern. The International Cooperation and Exchange Office and the Graduate School of our university also gave presentations about exchange programs and state-funded overseas study programs.
Li Jiangtao, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, held a meeting with Nigel Mongan, Vice President for International Affairs of the University of Nottingham, to discuss further practical cooperation in education and research between the two universities.
This Fair was organized by the International Cooperation and Exchange Office and was co-organized by the Academic Affairs Department, the Graduate School, the Student Affairs Office, the University Youth League Committee, and the Library. CUMT has hosted the Fair for 8 consecutive years with the theme of "Overseas Study, Igniting Dreams." The event aims to implement the national strategy of education internationalization and the university strategy of cultivating top-tier talents. It also contributes to the implementation of “Double First-Class” initiatives and provides more overseas study channels to our faculty and students.
