CUMT delegation visited the Education Department
of the Chinese Embassy in the UK
From October 21 to October 25, Cai Shihua, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), led a delegation on a visit to the University of Nottingham upon invitation. The delegation engaged in fruitful discussions and exchanges with university leaders, project managers, and professors on enhancing international communication capabilities and boosting the global influence of higher education institutions. The delegation also visited the Education Department of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom, where they met with teachers, students, and alumni from CUMT who are currently studying or participating in exchange programs in the UK.
During their visit to the University of Nottingham, Cai Shihua and CUMT delegation had a meeting with the heads of the university and relevant schools. Cai Shihua gave an overview of CUMT’s strategic goals, including the establishment of a world-class university with a distinctive focus on energy and resource management and the promotion of international education. He then reviewed the cooperation between CUMT and the University of Nottingham over the past 30 years, and expressed his hope to further consolidate the relationship and expand the scope of cooperation. Mark Gillott, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, and Charlie Carter, Deputy Director of External Relations for International Student Admissions, provided an overview of theie strategies for cultivating international partnerships, developing global curricula, fostering diverse campus cultures and enhancing its global reputation. Dr. Cecilia Goria, Director of the University’s Global Cooperation Center, and Professor Colin Wright presented the talent development program of the Department of Cultural, Media and Visual Studies. During the meeting, participants explored ways to promote faculty exchange, undergraduate credit exchange, and joint master’s degree programs. They also shared their experience and insights on development of international communication skills.
During the meeting with Zhang Jin, Minister Counselor of the Education Department at the Chinese Embassy in the UK, Cai Shihua introduced the exchange and cooperation programs between CUMT and British universities. He also sought Zhang Jin’s opinions and suggestions on further expansion of our international collaborations and lift of our global standing. Zhang Jin said that raising the international profile of a university is a systematic endeavor and an essential component in the development of a world-class institution. It requires top-level planning and execution, as well as the collective commitment of the entire university. She emphasized the importance of enhancing the CUMT’s global communication capabilities in various areas, such as improving English language instruction, the management of international faculty and students, and the official English website, all of which directly impact the institution’s global reputation. Zhang Jin suggested that CUMT prioritize academic and student exchanges to build a solid foundation for international cooperation, thereby promoting the internationalization from the ground up.
Cai Shihua and his delegation held discussions and exchanges with CUMT’s alumni and students at the University of Nottingham and Imperial College London. They also took the time to listen to their feedback and suggestions. The delegation included the heads and teachers of the Publicity Department of the CPC Committee of CUMT, the International Office, the School of Foreign Studies, and the School of Humanities and Arts.
