From December 12 to 18, President Zhao Hongwei of the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) led a delegation on an official visit to the University of Leoben in Austria and RWTH-Aachen University in Germany. In Austria, President Zhao and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Qi Mei, the Chinese Ambassador to Austria.
During their visit to Austria, President Zhao Hongwei of CUMT and his delegation paid a courtesy call to the Chinese Embassy in Austria. They met with Ambassador Qi Mei and had extensive exchanges with Huang Chongling, who is responsible for educational affairs at the embassy, as well as other relevant officials. At the meeting, President Zhao introduced the history of CUMT, highlighted its achievements in education and research, outlined its academic strengths, and shared the university’s future vision. The discussions delved into strategies for enhancing cooperation with Austrian universities and research institutions, focusing on areas such as energy resources and humanities and arts. There was also an in-depth exploration of how Sino-European educational and scientific collaboration could serve national development strategies and support CUMT's efforts to become a world-class institution with a distinctive focus on energy and resource fields. Huang Chongling expressed that the Chinese Embassy in Austria would fully support CUMT's initiatives to collaborate with Austrian counterparts in scientific research. She emphasized the embassy's commitment to promoting cooperation in several key areas, including joint educational programs, high-level talent cultivation, Sino-Austria government-funded research project applications, and cultural exchange activities.
Following the visit to the Chinese Embassy in Austria, the delegation proceeded to the University of Leoben in Austria and RWTH Aachen University in Germany for further engagements. At the University of Leoben, CUMT Vice President Bian Zhengfu met with Vice Rector Thomas Prohaska and signed a framework agreement for a dual Master’s degree program in "Circular Engineering,". Following the signing ceremony, Vice President Bian also visited CUMT students who are currently studying at the University of Leoben. Vice President Bian Zhengfu and his delegation had in-depth discussions with several key figures at RWTH Aachen University, including Professor Peter Kukla, international project manager from the International Cooperation Office and Dean of the Department of Earth Resources and Materials Engineering, Professor Axel Preusse from the Department of Earth Resources and Materials Engineering, Professor Holger Schuttumpf, Deputy Dean of Civil Engineering, Professor Christoph Brucker, a visiting professor at the City University of London and RWTH-Aachen University, Germany, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The discussions centered on implementing the agreements reached between the two universities, particularly focusing on the selection and dispatch of CUMT students to RWTH Aachen University for study. They also explored opportunities for expanding research collaborations and academic exchanges.
