Remarks by Professor Zoe Shipton, Fellow of the Royal
Academy of Engineering
On November 11, Vice President Bian Zhengfu of CUMT met with a delegation from the University of Strathclyde, UK, led by Professor Zoe Shipton, Professor of Geological Engineering, Head of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, along with Stuart Shorthouse, Head of International Cooperation & Recruitment for the Faculty of Engineering, on the morning of November 11 in Meeting Room B301, Xingjian Building of Nanhu Campus. The talks were chaired by Chen Wen, Director of CUMT International Office.
Bian Zhengfu extended a warm welcome to Professor Shipton and her delegation. He reviewed the history of collaboration between the two universities in the field of deep earth science, noting that both the University of Strathclyde and CUMT share the educational philosophy of "applying learning to practice" and possess highly compatible disciplinary strengths and characteristics. He highlighted the broad potential for cooperation across numerous academic fields and expressed his expectation to further expand collaboration in areas such as joint student cultivation and scientific research, facilitated by Professor Shipton.
Professor Shipton thanked CUMT for the warm reception. She expressed hope that this visit would serve as an opportunity to fully leverage the respective strengths and resources of both institutions in deep earth science, identify shared research interests, and explore in-depth collaboration in more disciplinary areas.
During the exchange session, Stuart Shorthouse introduced the organizational structure and main academic disciplines of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He expressed willingness to support joint student cultivation and the establishment of inter-university partnerships. Representatives from both sides held in-depth discussions on student exchange programs, faculty visit plans, the establishment of international joint laboratories, and international industry-academia cooperation, reaching preliminary intentions on multiple potential collaborative initiatives.
The meeting was attended by faculty members from CUMT's International Office, Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Academy of Science and Technology, School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Carbon Neutrality Institute, and Yunlong Lake Laboratory.
