From October 12 to 13, Zhao Hongwei, the Party Secretary of China University of Mining and Technology, led a delegation to visit the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The two sides conducted extensive and in-depth exchanges and discussions on personnel visits, research cooperation, and academic exchanges, and jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on international cooperation with NTNU Rector Tor Grande.

Zhao Hongwei stated that NTNU, as Norway's largest university with the strongest science and engineering capabilities, has profound foundations and outstanding reputations in fields such as energy transition, ocean engineering, new materials, and artificial intelligence, making significant contributions to industrial innovation, technological breakthroughs, and sustainable development in Norway and globally. CUMT has long been deeply engaged in energy and resource security and green, low-carbon transition development. The two universities have aligned disciplinary layouts, shared development goals, and broad space for cooperation. He expressed the expectation to take the signing of this MoU as a starting point, based on the disciplinary advantages and research characteristics of both universities, to continuously expand cooperation in talent cultivation, academic exchanges, research collaboration, and platform building, and to continuously elevate the level of cooperation, jointly contributing to deepening China-Norway educational and scientific exchanges and assisting global energy transition and sustainable development.

Tor Grande stated that NTNU highly values the visit of the CUMT delegation and looks forward to both sides taking the signing of this MoU as a starting point to continuously deepen exchanges and cooperation in areas such as green energy transition, zero-emission building technology, and efficient and clean utilization of minerals resources, working together to produce more high-level cooperative outcomes.

During the visit, the delegation also held several thematic seminars and discussions with Vikas Thakur, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at NTNU; Li Chunlin, Academician of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences; and heads and scholars from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum within the Faculty of Engineering.

The delegation then conducted a field visit of the university's Zero Emission Building (ZEB) Laboratory, gaining a detailed understanding of the laboratory's zero-emission technology solutions, and reached a cooperation intention to invite Norwegian experts to participate in guiding the design and construction of a zero-emission and smart energy building on campus. While visiting relevant laboratories in the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, both sides engaged in pragmatic consultations on topics such as jointly building research platforms, joint student cultivation, faculty mutual visits, and hosting international academic events in the fields of energy and resource development, smart city construction, and high-end equipment, reaching multiple cooperation intentions. Dean Vikas Thakur and relevant scholars stated that they will plan a return visit to CUMT in January 2027.

On the morning of October 13, the delegation attended the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at NTNU, engaging in exchanges and discussions with representatives of Chinese students and scholars in Norway on talent recruitment and research cooperation.

Relevant heads from the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School, Academy of Science and Technology, International Office, and International Student Management Office of CUMT accompanied the visit.

About NTNU: the university is Norway's top engineering and technology research center and a member of the Nordic Five Tech (N5T). Its history dates back to 1760, with its main campus located in Trondheim. The university's engineering disciplines rank among the top in Europe, with renewable energy and energy transition, ocean engineering, and advanced materials holding top academic positions in Europe, and its Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering programs ranking first in Europe. The university has established Norwegian national key laboratories in areas such as energy storage technology and zero-emission buildings, and is a core participant in major EU research projects in the energy field.
