Sub-conference on resource materials and recycling
The 2024 China Materials Conference and the Second World Materials Conference took place at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center from July 8 to 11. As the most significant and esteemed event of its kind, the conference merges participants in academic field, technology development, and industrial development within the realm of materials science in China. It drew the participation of nearly 100 academicians and 25,000 professionals from the global materials science and technology community. The B04 Sub-Conference on Resource Materials and Recycling Utilization was jointly hosted by six institutions, including the School of Materials Science and Physics and the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, CUMT. The sub-conference was chaired by esteemed scholars such as Academician Zhao Yuemin from CUMT, Academician He Hongping from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Feng Peizhong from CUMT, among others.
The B04 sub-conference was inaugurated by the School of Materials Science and Physics, CUMT in 2018. A total of 206 participants registered this year. Faculty members and students from CUMT’s School of Materials Science and Physics, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and School of Mines attended the conference. The event also attracted a significant number of experts and scholars from various institutions and research institutes, including the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Hebei University of Technology, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Guangdong University of Technology, South China University of Technology, Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research, University of Science and Technology of China, and Ganjiang Innovation Academy, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Leveraging the prestigious reputation of the China Materials Conference and the unique strengths of CUMT in energy and resources, the sub-conference is establishing itself as a key academic exchange platform for resource materials and recycling in China.
The Sub-conference on Resource Materials and Recycling Utilization features a comprehensive program with 62 academic reports and 7 posters, offering a wealth of content and exhibits significant theoretical depth. The themes encompass mineral materials and solid waste treatment, the efficient and comprehensive utilization of mineral and metallurgical resources, as well as material recycling and preparation. It highlights significant progress in China’s resource recycling research field in recent years. This includes the comprehensive exploitation of nanostructures and elements within clay minerals, the recovery and optoelectronic application of waste tin and lead, the resourceful attributes and upscale utilization of coal gangue, the swift humification of fly ash/biomass solid waste and its soil application, the study of photovoltaic silicon-based solid waste purification and recycling, the research and implementation of integrated utilization of industrial solid waste components such as red mud, the investigation into the control mechanisms of explosions and combustion during the sand casting of large, complex magnesium alloy components, the pivotal role of bentonite in the creation of new adsorption/catalytic materials, the research on evaluating the production of low-carbon geopolymers from engineering muck using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and the principles and technologies behind the collaborative preparation of fast-hardening and early-strength repair and reinforcement materials from metallurgical solid waste, among others. Several teachers from CUMT delivered academic reports. Professor Feng Peizhong was invited to make a presentation titled “The Fundamental, Supporting, and Interdisciplinary Nature of Materials Majors and Disciplines: A Multidisciplinary Perspective” at the 2024 Working Conference of the Teaching Steering Committee for Materials Majors in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education.
