On July 6th, 2018, the closing ceremony of 2018 AMEE & Belt and Road Initiative Summer School Program was held at the School of Architecture and Design of CUMT. Dr. LIU Bo, Party Secretary of CUMT, Prof. ZHOU Guoqing, Vice-president of CUMT, and over 150 Chinese and foreign teachers and students attended the ceremony.
On the ceremony, Dr. LIU Bo conferred the completion certificates to every international student attending the program, and Prof. Zhou Guoqing conferred excellent volunteer certificates to CUMT students who contributed outstanding services for the program.
Dr. LIU Bo showed her congratulations to Chinese and foreign students for their excellent performance and successful completion. She expressed that at the time of globalization, knowledge and S&T are changing the fate of mankind, which brings new questions on ethic and morality. How to treat different civilizations and how to treat and solve new questions are the missions of education. The summer school program provides a platform for Chinese and foreign young students for mutual communication, understanding and learning. It is glad to see, through the program, all the participants have learned knowledge, enhanced friendship, and especially raised their understanding on different cultures. Dr. LIU expected the international students will bring home what they have learned, thought and felt in CUMT, and tell their good stories to more people about China and CUMT. She also hoped the students to act as messengers of Sino-foreign friendship to answer new questions and solve new challenges facing by mankind through trans-culture views and abilities.
Mr. Zhang Zhenkang, director of International Office, director of the Summer School Program, made a conclusion remark at the ceremony. Natalia Kowalska from AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland, Respati Mohammad from Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran”Yogyakarta, Indonesia and Feng Zhao from CUMT Sun Yueqi Honors College shared their achievements and feelings during the program.
On the ceremony, Chinese and foreign students brought joint art shows. International students’ performances of Chinese calligraphy and Tai Chi fully showed the Chinese culture they have learned in the program. The Chinese calligraphy of “I love China”, “Hello CUMT” and “Sweet Memory, Forever Friendship” written by international students completely reflected their voices. Dance of Han and Tang Dynasties titled “River’s Song” by CUMT students reflected the most glorious spirit and art of Han and Tang Dynasties in Chinese ancient civilization history. At the end, all the Chinese and foreign students chorused the song “Long Live Friendship”.
2018 AMEE & Belt and Road Initiative Summer School Program commenced on June 14 and ended on July 8. Chinese and foreign students participated in various and abundant course studies and activities, including specialized courses, Chinese language and culture, academic lectures, culture visits, field practices etc. This year, some new trials are applied to the contents and patterns of the program. It is the first time to implement selected courses in both engineering and humanity areas, introduce foreign teachers, and have both foreign and Chinese students studying in the same classroom. All the participants showed their satisfaction on the program and its arrangements. Samuel Ogunfuye from West Virginia University said, it is the first time he comes to China, and he was deeply impressed by the diligent and friendly Chinese people, profound Chinese traditional culture, and the great achievements of China’s economy and social development. Respati from the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran”Yogyakarta, Indonesia said, the arrangement of the summer school program is a complete new experience to him. He satisfied with teachers’ profound professional skills, modern intelligent classrooms, advanced labs, and the classroom atmosphere created by both foreign and Chinese students. Linus from TU Bergakademie Freiberg highly appraised the State Key Lab for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering. He said the lab has largest scale and widest academic range he has ever seen in this area, and it inspires greatly on his academic studies. Feng Zhao from CUMT Sun Yueqi Honors College said that the summer school program establishes a whole-English teaching platform, which lets Chinese students know about the teaching mode in foreign universities, and practices their oral English and communication ability.
It is reported that the summer school program started in 2014 and was held in CUMT for 5 consecutive years. The program this year attracts 39 international students from 13 universities in 12 countries, including West Virginia University(USA), Saint-Petersburg Mining University(Russia), Montanuniversität Leoben(Austria), AGH University of Science and Technology(Polan), University of Mining and Geology ”St. Ivan Rilski”(Bulgaria), TU Bergakademie Freiberg(Germany), Lulea University of Technology(Sweden), the University of Wollongong(Australia), German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology(Mongolia), Hanoi University of Mining and Geology(Vietnam), Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran”Yogyakarta(Indonesia)、Lambung Mankurat University(Indonesia) and Wits University(South Africa). 90 CUMT students from Sun Yueqi Honors College also participated in the whole program.
The summer school further cements the partnership between CUMT and AMEE member universities as well as BRI country universities, enhances the friendly exchanges between Chinese and foreign students. It also provides an opportunity for students from Sun Yueqi Honors College receiving the teaching wholly in English, which further promotes CUMT’s educational reform and talent training towards world leading university.
